There is a saying “One cannot love what they don’t know”. Mira Rakhmat and Bai Khairullin’s film offers an incredible opportunity for a bigger audience to know and learn about the art that has been waiting to be loved. I am grateful for that! Special respect to AlimaAcademy for organising this heart-warming event! The art of Tatar Leather Mosaic is precious, needs to be appreciated, valued, supported and promoted. It represents a profound heritage of the Tatars. It enriches global cultural and artistic landscape. The art of Tatar Leather Mosaic offers a perspective into the history, worldview and artistry of the Tatar people.  Footwear decoration is not unique-to-the-Tatars activity. What unique to the Tatars is the technology of crafting the decoration itself. Bizelgen kayuly kun technology can be called in English as leather inlay or leather mosaic. Both are the most technologically intense and complex methods of applied leather decoration.

Featured in the movie so called Kazan stitch is one of three core integral elements that make Art of Leather Mosaic and its oldest and perfected embodiment – shchiteq –  an exceptional art with utilitarian function. What makes shchiteq technology unique? A combination of three integral elements: 1. soft colored leather patterned cutouts   2. aligned/stacked to create intricate either meaning-bearing or abstract design based on proto-Turkic & traditional Tatar ornamental elements 3. attached from the inside by hand by two-needle “saddle” stitch that is embellished with looped decorative silk thread (so-called “Kazan” stitch).  The stitch has very distinctive look. Although the technique of this stitch is not unique (it has been employed by the people of North Africa, Central Asia, Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe for centuries), the way the Tatars has been utilizing the stitch to create complex and intricate designs has no analogy. (Compare“Kazan” Stitch with “Moroccan” Stitch).  The Tatars combined these three integral elements along with unprecedented creativity in experimenting with patterns and colors. Production of shchiteqler requires complex creative approach and teamwork of several skilled craftspeople. It is crucial to conserve, promote and support continuous production of  items made with Tatar Leather Mosaic technique, especially the most complex – shchiteq.

Aren’t they exceptionally beautiful in its’ own? Do they have all elements of traditional Tatar shchiteqler?
